Cathedral Music Director Thomas Viezens began his training in church music during his school days in Helmstedt with retired KMD Friedrich Isenbürger.
After leaving school, he studied Catholic church music at the Hanover University of Music and Drama (B examination; organ with Dietrich v. Amsberg, Prof. Harald Vogel, Hans-Joachim Rolf and Bernhard Schneider, choir conducting with Prof. Heinz Hennig) and at the University of the Arts in Bremen (A examination 1992; organ with Martina Kürschner and cathedral organist Prof. Wolfgang Baumgratz, choir conducting with Prof. Wolfgang Helbich).
After completing his studies, he worked from 1992 to 1997 as a deanery church musician for the diocese of Hildesheim, based in St. Ludwig, Celle. Important aspects of his work there included the establishment and expansion of the Celle deanery choir, the founding of the St. Ludwig children's choir and the planning of the new organ, which was completed in 1998.
On January 1, 1998, he was appointed cathedral organist at the High Cathedral in Hildesheim. In April 2000, the Hildesheim Cathedral Chapter appointed him Cathedral Music Director, the responsible director of Hildesheim Cathedral music. This includes the direction of the cathedral choir, the chamber choir, the Vesperschola and the choral schola “Schola Gregoriana”.
